“THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ACTIVITY for building knowledge for their eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.”

Happy National Read Aloud Day!!! We celebrated the holiday today in kindergarten. We had guest readers come in and do read alouds throughout the day. The students loved having special readers come in and read to them. We did a total of 11 read alouds today.
Reading aloud to children is so important.
-Reading aloud is widely recognized as the single most important activity leading to language development. Among other things, reading aloud builds word-sound awareness in children, a potent predictor of reading success.
-Reading aloud lets parents and teachers be role models for reading. When children see adults excited about reading, they will catch their enthusiasm.
-Reading aloud lets children use their imaginations to explore people, places, times, and events beyond their own experiences.
-Reading aloud introduces the language of books, which differs from language heard in daily conversations, on television, and in movies. Book language is more descriptive and uses more formal grammatical structures.

We know how important reading aloud to child is so grab a book, find a comfy spot, and start reading!
