We had a great week in kindergarten! There was lots of reading, writing, and math skills worked on this week! Our sight words are beginning and they move quickly so please remember to work on them at home. We learned the, and, is, a for this theme.

We just wanted to let you know about a fundraiser we will be doing at DGS for St. Jude. We have had students in the past that were St. Jude patients and we have students who are currently St. Jude patients. Mrs. Ellis has organized “Pajamas for a Purpose.” It is an optional fundraiser that you can choose to participate in if you would like. Students who donate $1.00 or more may wear pajamas to school on “Spirit Fridays.” Spirit Fridays are the first Friday of each month. If you would like to donate to St. Jude just send $1.00 or more in an envelope with your student and they can wear pajamas! This will start on September 5th. We want to thank you in advance for participating in the fundraiser! St. Jude is such a great cause and here at DGS we are huge supporters!

Hi friends and family!

Welcome to the second full week of school!  We are so excited about the great learning already going on in Kindergarten.

Reading-Building Stamina

We’ve been working towards building our stamina during reading time.  Our friends are getting better and better each day!  We talk about how we can read a book by reading the pictures, reading the words, or retelling the story.  We all CAN do it!

Check out our super writing skills!  This week we are working on great handwriting while focusing on the letters t, b, and f.  Watch for papers to come home that showcase your student’s work.  Have them point out the sky, plane, and grass lines.  These letters use all three of those special lines!

Our kiddos love their special classes.  World Language and Music are held in our classroom while PE, Art, and Computers are in separate rooms.  The students had a chance to play Mr. Adams’ keyboard.  It was a new experience for many of our friends, but Mr. Adams played duets with those who already knew a song or two.

Ask your kiddos about…

  • The fire drill on Tuesday
  • What “pianissimo” means
  • Ask “Como te llamas?”
  • What does the principal do?

Let’s keep having an awesome week!  Thanks for everything you all do in helping our students be classroom superheroes!

Well we survived our first week of kindergarten at DGS and what a great week it was! We had such a fun week getting to know all our students and meeting our parents at Back to School Night.  We send a big thank you to the parents who were able to attend on Thursday night.  If you couldn’t make it, no worries, your students brought home the information we discussed.  It was a week of learning routines and schedules in kindergarten.  We started our “specials” this week which included PE, Art, Music, Spanish, and Technology.  The students loved all the specials!

We also started our curriculum this week.  Our reading curriculum is broken up into 16 themes throughout the year.  Each theme is two weeks long.  We are in the middle of Theme 1 right now.  Theme 1 is Faces and Places at School.  We have six vocabulary words for each theme along with four sight words.  Theme 1 vocab words are principal, school, students, respect, neighborhood, and behave.  Our sight words for Theme 1 are the, a, is, and.  We will start week two of our theme next week.  At the end we will take our theme test.

Along with reading, we started our math this week.  Chapter one is Numbers to 5.  We are learning everything we can about numbers 1-5!  The students love working in groups and working with all the manipulatives for each lesson!

Keep an eye out on our blog for more information about kindergarten and everything we will be working on this year! We will post special events, cool projects we’re working on in class, and all the awesome activities we do in kindergarten!
